Candles Homeware & Lifestyle

Welcome to the world of luxury fragrances – Gem Candles & Diffusers created by Mara Hotung, Gem Voyager. Each and every scent has been specially designed with precious gems in mind: Diamond, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Jade and Pearl.

Working with a leading British candle maker, Mara slowly developed her exclusive line of Candle Jewels. A process that took over 6 months. Her attention to detail and commitment to create a scented candle of the highest quality was carefully monitored at each stage. By happy coincidence, she was delighted to discover that she was producing candles in the same family run facility where other world renowned luxury brands produce their candles. But then again “like attracts like”.

The whole idea of luxury candles came to her while she was in her Surrey studio designing a sapphire ring for a client. Thoughts of exotic faraway places where some of the best sapphires originate – Burma, Thailand and Kashmir – led naturally to the idea of cinnabar, lemongrass and mandarin oranges.

“I wanted to create a fragrance for gemstones that everyone can enjoy. Every gem has its own story and I wanted to tell that story through fragrance. I thought it would be a wonderful and creative project to marry the two. I thought to fill your home with the delightful scents of roses by lighting a Ruby candle, would generate a true sensory experience. I wanted to create atmosphere through my love of gemstones and to share that encounter.”

Important Candle Care Instructions

Gem Candles Information

Gem Candles are made from 100% natural wax blend of mineral paraffin, soya and vegetable derivatives. This blend provides a good burn performance and lasting fragrance. The 200 gram candles burn for 40 hours and the 750 gram candles burn for 100 hours.

Storing Candles

Always store Gem Candles in a cool dry place out of direct sunlight as this could damage the structure of the wax and affect the way your candle performs.

Avoid Draughts

Gem Candles burn best in still air. Make sure they are placed away from open windows and doors.

Wick Care

Before lighting always ensure your Gem Candle wick is trimmed to approximately 5mm. This will prevent the candle from smoking and ensure a better scent diffusion. A reduced flame size could prevent possible thermal shock to the glass. Please make sure the wick is centered and if the wick becomes off-centre at any time, extinguish the flame.

Candle Memory

Set the candle memory to get the best possible burn time from your Gem Candle. The life of the Gem Candle is determined by the size of the wax pool on the initial burn. When you light your candle for the first time do not extinguish it until an even liquid wax pool has been created right to the edge of the glass. This can take between 3-4 hours. Your Gem Candle will then burn evenly all the way down. If you extinguish your Gem Candle before a complete wax pool has been formed “tunnelling” will occur and you will be left with an outer rim of wasted wax.

Wax pool

The candle wax pool should be clear of any debris prior to burning. Match heads and wick remnants in the wax pool can lead to a Gem Candle flaring due to the debris igniting the wax!

Extinguishing your candle

It is recommended that you use a candle snuffer to extinguish your flame. If you do blow out your candle be careful as the liquid wax may splatter. The wick may continue to glow and emit smoke so keep an eye on it until it is fully extinguished.

Pull Away

“Pull Away” is what can appear to be air bubbles around the sides of filled candles. This occurs as the wax expands and contracts within the glass depending on the temperature of the surrounding area. This is characteristic of all waxes and usually happens when the wax is in a cold environment. By simply placing your candle in a warm room, the air bubbles will disappear. Pull Away does not affect the burn or quality of your candle.

Safety Points

  1. Make sure you remove all packaging before burning and always read individual candle warnings.
  2. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  3. Do not burn candles on or near anything that can catch fire and allow ample headroom for the candle flame in a well-ventilated area.
  4. Never allow the flame to touch the side of the glass and stop burning your candle when the wax level drops to 10mm from the base.
  5. Do not place candle in direct contact with a glass, marble or wooden surface whilst burning. Make sure all candles are burned on a flat heat resistant surface away from children & pets.
  6. Ensure the candle wax pool is free from debris prior to burning.
  7. Always leave at least 10cm between burning candles.
  8. Do not burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time.
  9. Prior to burning always check that the glass is not cracked or damaged and discard if this is the case.
  10. Leave the candle to cool down and allow the wax to solidify before moving.
  11. If the candle smokes, the flame becomes too high or flickers excessively, extinguish it, then trim the wick and check for draughts before lighting again.
